Sales Start Date: 29th January 2015
London, UK, 6th January 2015 Nikon today announces the new AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR. As the first F-mount NIKKOR to be equipped with a Phase Fresnel element, this high-performance prime lens offers the ultimate balance of compact build, telephoto reach, and superior image quality.
Photographers on the hunt for a telephoto lens that delivers performance and portability will love the new NIKKOR 300mm f/4. Ideal for sports and wildlife photography as well as travel shots and tight, detail-oriented portraiture, this NIKKOR is the smart way to fill the frame but not your bag. Use of a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element noticeably reduces the size and weight of the lens, while the combination of an f/4 maximum aperture, 300mm focal length, and impressive VR technology enables superb results. Built to handle shooting in diverse conditions, a fluorine coat actively repels water, dust, and dirt without compromising image quality.
Edward Allinson, Junior Product Manager, Lenses & Accessories, Nikon UK, says: “Nikon constantly strive for new and innovative ways to ensure that each new lens offered is even better than the last. The new 300mm is a perfect example of this. The new and improved lightweight design makes portability even easier than before, allowing photographers the freedom to shoot whenever the opportunity arises. With new and improved features and optical quality, D-SLR users can benefit from unrestricted usage and optimum shooting.”
The new AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4 is a seriously smart way to shoot telephoto without carrying heavy gear. Use of a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element keeps the body remarkably compact and lightweight without degrading image quality. The combination of f/4 maximum aperture, 300mm focal length, and impressive VR technology allows strong low-light performance and beautiful bokeh. Enhancing performance further is an electromagnetic diaphragm that provides enhanced stability in auto exposure for consistent, more precise exposures, especially when shooting at high frame rates. Three focus modes are employed: A/M (prioritises autofocus even when the focus ring is in use), M/A (allows instant switching from autofocus to manual operation in AF mode), and M (manual).
Nikon’s renowned Vibration Reduction (VR) technology enables impressive shooting speeds of up to 4.5 stops slower*, and the all-new SPORT VR mode makes it possible to pan fast-moving subjects with incredible clarity. Designed to deliver a stable viewfinder image when shooting high-speed movement, SPORT mode allows a continuous shooting frame rate with reduced release time lag similar to those that are possible when VR is turned off.
The new NIKKOR 300mm f/4 is the first F-mount lens to boast a phase Fresnel (PF) lens element. Developed by Nikon, the Phase Fresnel element utilises the photo diffraction phenomenon to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration: it reduces the number of lens elements required to achieve high-quality results and enables the outstandingly compact and lightweight build. In addition, Nikon’s ED glass ensures sharpness, an aspherical lens element controls unwanted distortion, and Nikon’s anti-reflective Nano Crystal Coat minimises ghosting and flare.
Weighing just 755 g, the NIKKOR 300mm f/4 is substantially smaller and lighter than its predecessor. Whether you want to cover more ground without tiring, shoot telephoto without a tripod, or have the room to pack a telephoto lens just in case the shooting situation demands it, this lens gives you options—and results. Built to deliver in diverse conditions, it boasts a fluorine coat that enhances durability and makes it easier to clean the glass without damaging the surface.
The AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4 comes with the new HB-73 Lens Hood and CL-M3 Lens Case.
The optional RT-1 Tripod Collar Ring enables the lens to be rotated freely for better balance, and smooth transition between vertical and horizontal orientation when using a tripod.
* In Normal mode based on CIPA standards.
