London, United Kingdom, June 2nd 2021 - Nikon is pleased to announce NX Field, a new remote shooting system scheduled to be released on June 17, 2021. NX Field will support those on the front line of news and sports photography, allowing users to link multiple Nikon digital SLR cameras, operate and adjust settings, and automatically upload images captured with the cameras to an FTP*1 server.
NX Field will be released by NPS (Nikon Professional Services), the organisation through which Nikon offers support and services to professional photographers throughout the world. The system is compatible with the Nikon D6 and Nikon D5 digital SLR cameras, and support for mirrorless cameras such as the Nikon Z 9, Z 7II, and Z 6II is planned for the future.
By connecting multiple compatible Nikon digital SLR cameras, the system enables the ‘master’ camera to simultaneously control the shutter release on the remote cameras. Cameras can be connected via a wired LAN cable or wireless LAN*2.
After downloading the NX Field app, the shutter release on remote cameras can be controlled from smartphone or tablet devices. The app can be used to easily perform a number of tasks remotely, including checking the Live View through the lens, changing camera settings, and checking and uploading images captured with the cameras.
NX Field supports remote shooting via 5G*3 or the internet, meaning it can be used on the move. It could, for example, enable the operation of cameras positioned in Tokyo from outside Japan.
Meanwhile, by enabling the remote cameras to be positioned in places that people cannot easily access, such as at the finish line of a race or near a stadium ceiling, NX Field supports the capture of decisive and split-second moments from previously challenging perspectives and angles.
What's more, the system enables the immediate and automatic upload of images captured with the master and remote cameras to an FTP server.
Nikon will continually update NX Field and support professional photographers active on the front line of news and sport reportage.
To use NX Field, the dedicated camera firmware must be installed (at a fee) and the NX Field app*4 downloaded to a smart device. See the NPS website for details regarding installation: https://www.nikon.co.uk/en_GB/product/software/nx-field
*1 FTP stands for "file transfer protocol".
*2 Wireless connection is possible when the WT-5 or WT-6 wireless transmitter is used.
*3 There are some limitations. A router that supports port forwarding is required. Using a virtual private network (VPN) for secure communication is recommended when using the Internet to operate a remote camera.
*4 NX Field app for smart devices can be downloaded free of charge from the App Store®. Once the dedicated camera firmware has been installed, an iPhone® or iPad® to which the app has been installed can be used. See the NPS website for further information.
