The AF Nikkor 18mm f/2.8D remained as the only option of a fixed focal length ultrawide beyond the 20mm focal length until the eventual debut of the AF-S Nikkor 14mm f/2.8D ED in 2003. It retailed for £1370 (Equivalent to some £2100 at today’s rates (after all the Yen appreciation and subsequent price increases). The AF-D ultrawide lens improved upon a previous f/3.5 manual design with a faster maximum lens speed of f/2.8. Internally the 18mm 2.8D Autofocus uses an all new optical design in a rather complex 13 lens elements in 10 groups arrangement. To counter any possible common Seidel aberrations often found in ultrawideangle lens designs, an aspherical lens element was added, which serves in suppressing coma and spherical aberrations and partly contributes to the overall exceptional image definition. The lens can focus down to a minimum distance of 0.25m (0.85 ft) and delivers a magnification ratio of approx. 1:9.1. Furthermore, Nikon incorporated a Close Range Optical Correction System into the design so as to auto retain its excellent optical quality when shooting in close distances. |
